Prosecutors not to start probing Pro TV cameraman case

The General Prosecutor’s Office (GPO) will not start to probe the case of alleged illegal arrest and maltreatment of Pro TV’s cameraman Mihai Sambra, Info-prim Neo has learnt from a communiqué by the GPO. After investigations, the prosecutors have found the Mihai Sambra’s statements as to the alleged torture applied by policemen on him on October 8 found no confirmation, being countered by statements by a number of witnesses. According to the Procuratura, Mihai Sambra would have had a conflict on Wednesday evening after 21.00 with a student from the dormitory he lives in, challenging him physically and verbally. The conflict would have taken place in a shop near the dorm - Hristo Botev str. 4/3 – and the cameraman is said to have been hit with the head in his face. Pro TV’s administration has told Info-Prim Neo the station sticks to its position earlier worded, according to which the law-enforcers would allegedly fabricate evidence and witnesses. Pro TV maintains Mihai Sambra was fiercely beaten up in the evening of October 8 in the quarters of the Buiucani sector police. According to the station, he was lifted from the street by a police patrol an taken to the commissariat where he was alleged maltreated by policemen. Mihai Sambra, who was left to leave the next morning, says no record has been made concerning to his being taken into custody and no explanation has been produced.
