Prosecutors encourage victims of domestic violence to report

“Domestic violence isn't a private business anymore. It is a social problem. And both the anti-violence actors and society have the responsibility to prevent such cases, protect the victims and punish the aggressors”, stated Causeni District Prosecutor Ion Oboroceanu at a news conference on Tuesday, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the statistics presented at the conference, from 2009 and until present, the territorial prosecutor's offices received about 300 complaints related to domestic violence. In 24 cases criminal proceedings were initiated, including 5 on charges of murder and 4 for rape. Administrative proceedings were initiated against 186 aggressors. According to the prosecutors, in most cases the abused persons do not report the abuses because they don't believe the aggressors will be punished. Another reason is that the victims do not know their rights or do not have money to get a good lawyer. There are also many cases when the victims file complaints but take them back later. The worst thing is that in 70-80% of the cases the victims are forced to do that, said Ion Oboroceanu. Prosecutor Iurie Perevoznic, the head of the Human Rights Division at the Prosecutor General's Office, stressed that domestic violence badly affects the children, who are inclined to adopt such deviant behaviors in their families when they grow up. According to Iurie Perevoznic, one of the most efficient measures to protect the victims is to force the aggressors in court to leave the shared living spaces. An alternative for the aggressors who do not have another place to live in are the re-socialization centers where they are offered assistance in addition to accommodation. The Law on the prevention and combating of domestic violence took effect in September 2008.
