After being arrested four years ago on extortion and bribery charges, a former Orhei-based prosecuting attorney was finally sentenced by a district court to 7 years in prison.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said in a press release that in June 2015, the prosecutor extorted and received a $600 bribe from a man to close a driving-under-the-influence case.
The prosecutor was caught red-handed immediately after he received the bribe. Pending trial, he was suspended by the High Council of Prosecutors.
In addition to the prison term, the former prosecutor was also ordered to pay a 160,000 lei ($9,005) fine and was barred from holding public offices for a period of 10 years.
The sentence is appealable.
