Gheorge Ciobanu, a recently retired anti-corruption prosecutor, is requesting that disciplinary proceedings are initiated against Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen over “his statements and actions”.
Ciobanu told a press conference that he resigned on Friday from the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office in protest at Harunjen’s “hostile actions” against him. Some would say that Harunjen asked for Ciobanu’s resignation over the prosecutor’s failure to report about the involvement of his son in a traffic accident, but Ciobanu maintains it was actually a pretext.
In fact, says Ciobanu, the prosecutor general started developing a hostile attitude towards him in 2016, and the bank fraud investigation was one of the reasons.
“If you the journalists have the impression that something is being done to effectively investigate the $1billion fraud, you can take it from me that it’s not,” says Gheorghe Ciobanu.
He went on to add that Eduard Harunjen is “in despair” over the prospect of losing his job and this “affects his clarity of thought and the logic of his actions.”
Ciobanu said he was ready to cooperate with any internal investigation if disciplinary proceedings are started against Harunjen.
