The prosecutor of Chisinau municipality Ivan Diacov decided to leave his post. He announced his resignation in a new conference at IPN on November 30, arguing that narcomania and corruption subdued the Prosecutor’s Office.

Ivan Diacov said that while in the line of duty, he repeatedly informed the prosecutor general about the acts of corruption and abuse of power committed by prosecutors and judges and demanded that these should be held accountable, but his notifications were ignored.

The prosecutor of Chisinau municipality noted that his term in office expires on December 3, but this fact does not oblige him to resign. He has the right to hold a managerial post in the prosecution service for another two years and a half, while the post of prosecutor – for how long his state of health permits, but he decided to leave this service.

Ivan Diacov stated that he often criticized decisions by the prosecutor general and expressed his disagreement with the postponement of the prosecution service reform by this. All his approaches were fully neglected even if the post of prosecutor general allows intervening in such cases. Diacov was thus forced by the situation to make public a series of facts so as to inform society about the illegalities committed in the legal system. The senior authorities were also informed about these, but no reaction followed.

According to the prosecutor, in order to intimidate him, the prosecutor general initiated a series of internal inquiries into his service. As a result, in protest at the abusive actions taken by the prosecutor general, he decided to resign from the prosecution service of Moldova. Also in protest, he will give back all the internal awards he received from the Prosecutor General’s Office as well as the Labor Glory order that was offered to him for irreproachable work in the prosecution service during 35 years.

Ivan Diacov was named prosecutor of Chisinau municipality in December 2010. He held the same post also in 1998-2001.
