Prosecutor General’s Office celebrates 20 years of foundation

The Prosecutor General’s Office should become a European institution in a European state and reforms must be implemented as soon as possible. Good wishes were given in a roundtable meeting held to mark 20 years of the institution’s foundation on January 27, Info-Prim Neo reports. Arcing President Marian Lupu spoke about the reform of the Prosecutor’s Office. “Society expects that the approved changes will start to be implemented this year. We hope that in your work you will pay less attention to formalities, will allow fewer ambiguities and will be more concerned about the observance of the fundamental rights of all the participants in the penal process,” he stated. He also said that the people need a European Prosecutor’s Office in a European Moldova as ‘European’ means not only the geographic position, but also a new level of activity, European living and security standards. Minister of Justice Oleg Efrim said that during 20 years the identification of the place and role of the Prosecutor’s Office in the country’s law enforcement system was and continues to be a serious challenge. “The Prosecutor’s Office must be independent, efficient and functional. Ensuring the safety of every person and society in general is a top priority for the state and its obligations,” said the minister, adding that only this way can the people trust the laws and the institutions of the state. Chairman of the Supreme Council of Magistrates Nicolae Timofti said the enforcement of the law in Moldova depends greatly on the position of the Prosecutor’s Office. “The institution works professionally and its personnel includes worthy people,” he stated. Ombudsman Anatolie Munteanu, director of the Center for Human Rights of Moldova, said the Prosecutor’s Office is yet to do a lot of things to improve the institutional capacities, reduce the internal risk factors and increase professionalism so that the people have confidence in it. Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubko said the mentality of those who are to implement these reforms must be changed. “The way of thinking of certain prosecutors is inappropriate and should be modified. For this we need three things: goal, political support, and financial support,” he stressed.
