Prosecutor general will be elected by a majority of votes of CSP members

The prosecutor general will be elected based on the vote of the majority of the members of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP). A draft law providing for the exclusion of mandatory scores was given a first reading by Parliament, IPN reports.

According to the bill, candidates for the position of prosecutor general will be assessed by each member of the CSP according to the training and professional skills, integrity and other personal qualities of the candidates. The candidate who will accumulate the highest number of votes, but not less than half of the number of members present at a meeting with quorum, will be proposed to the President of the country to be appointed as prosecutor general. If no candidate accumulates the required number of votes, the contest will be rerun.

“The designation of the winner for the position of prosecutor general by the vote of the CSP members will be the most democratic and fair way of selection. The aspect regarding the assessment and designation of the winner of the contest is left to the discretion of the Superior Council of Prosecutors, which, by regulation, approves the contest holding method,” said bill sponsor Igor Chiriac, PAS MP.

Currently, the normative framework provides that the prosecutor general is appointed based on the score awarded by each CSP member. The draft law amending the procedure for choosing candidates for the position of prosecutor general is to be give a final reading by Parliament.
