Prosecutor general: I will not turn into ‘cannon fodder’
Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubko denies the accusations of murder made by the leader of the “Antimafie” Movement Sergiu Mocanu, who asserted that on December 23 the prosecutor, together with other persons, took part in boar hunting in the forest in Calinesti, Falesti, where he accidentally shot dead a man - Sorin Paciu – but hid the crime in order to avoid criminal punishment. In a statement issued two days after the accusations were made public, the prosecutor says that the accusations are a lie, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I understand very well what is there behind this ‘construction’ aimed at defaming me, but I will give more details immediately after the investigation is closed, as required by law. I assume this statement and the investigation will show that I said the truth and everything represents a campaign aimed at defaming me,” it is said in the statement.
Valeriu Zubko also said he still hopes that the political struggles or some people’s obsession with him will not prevail over the law, morality and correctness. “I can be investigated by any state institution, but I will not turn into ‘cannon fodder’ in the dirty campaigns of some people or in the struggles between politicians for the post of prosecutor general. I will defend my honor and the peace of my family, regardless of the ranks of those who will groundlessly accuse me in continuation,” he stated.
According to the prosecutor, if such an accusation is confirmed, his resignation and his punishment will be imminent. If the accusations are false, those who hold high ranking posts in the state and hurried to make assessments over this case without waiting for the investigation to be completed, encouraging thus officially the campaign launched by Sergiu Mocanu, should tender their resignation of honor.
The man injured during hunting on December 23 died in the hospital. The case was made public by Sergiu Mocanu on January 6. The same day, Deputy Minister of the Interior Ion Bodrug said that the prosecutors declined the police’s help in investigating this case.
The prosecutors in Falesti, where the tragedy happened, said that they have two suspects in this case, but the prosecutor general is not among them. Moreover, it’s not certain that Valeriu Zubko took part in that hunting. Quoting the Falesti prosecutors, a number of TV channels reported that the main suspect is the vice president of the Chisinau Court of Appeals Gheorghe Cretu and an approach will be made to the Supreme Council of Magistrates to allow indicting him.
