Prosecutor General doesn’t show up in Parliament, sends briefing note instead

Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo has failed to appear today before Parliament, where MPs were supposed to hear a report on the recovery of funds stolen from the banking system. Instead, a briefing note was sent to the MPs. It has been decided that the information sent by the Prosecutor General - the briefing note and the progress report - will be examined by the Legal Committee before Parliament can adopt a resolution on the matter.

At the start of the session, Speaker Igor Grosu said that the hearings are convened for two reasons: increased public interest in the subject and the fact that the progress report is one of the commitments that Moldova has to the European Union. In particular, the progress report is tied to the memorandum on the provision of European macro-financial assistance.

Șor Party MP Denis Ulanov said that he had requested the inclusion of a draft resolution developed by his group on the agenda of the Legal Committee meeting. The draft resolution concerns inter-institutional cooperation which aims to streamline the recovery mechanism of funds stolen from the banking system.

MP Vlad Batrîncea, Communists and Socialists, said that his group received information from law enforcement authorities. “The interesting part regarding this information is the fact that the political factor emerges, namely the role of the National Bank, which requested financial cover from the cabinet. This new information needs to be examined,” Batrîncea said. He supported the idea that the information presented should be examined within the Legal Committee, including with the involvement of members from other parliamentary committees.

The MPs took a break, during which the Legal Committee is to convene.
