Proposals for improving law on pet protection

Representatives of civil society formulated a number of proposals for improving the bill on the keeping and protection of pets, which was approved by the Government on January 22. The public debates were organized by the Liberal Democratic Party, IPN reports.

The bill limits the number of pet animals that a family can keep to two. Representatives of the civic initiative group “Protection of Animals in Moldova” said the number of animals should be set depending on the size of the owner’s home so as to prevent cases when dozens of animals live in a small place and the hygiene norms cannot be thus respected.

The initiative group suggested castrating all the pets, not only the dogs of races that are considered dangerous and the stray dogs, as the bill provides. This will help avoid the uncontrolled reproduction when these animals become homeless.

Representatives of the Association “Alga” asked imposing a moratorium on the killing of stray animals by the municipal authorities until the bill is passed by Parliament.

The leader of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet said that Moldova needs a law that will defend the pets, but the discussions on such a law would be long-lasting. He added that the law should be adopted in the final reading by the end of the spring-summer session of Parliament, in July.
