The NATO Summit of September 4-5 will have indirect effects on Moldova. Political analyst Viorel Cibotaru said that proposals for developing the armed forces in Moldova and for effectively exploiting the existing instruments of cooperation with NATO could be submitted at the summit.

Viorel Cibotaru has told IPN that there will be probably analyzed special programs of cooperation, such as the Partnership for Peace, and discussed the building of national defense and terrorism fighting institutions. These programs need to be assessed and new forms of cooperation with the non-NATO member states will most probably be considered at the summit.

In a press release, the British Embassy in Chisinau says the United Kingdom will host the NATO Summit at the Celtic Manor in Wales. This will be the largest gathering of international leaders ever to take place in the UK. This year’s Summit in Wales will be one of the most important Summits in NATO’s history as world leaders consider how NATO can continue to be at the forefront of building stability in an unpredictable world.

Senior statesmen and women from 28 member states of NATO and from nations that partner with NATO in the interests of collective security will attend the event. Moldova is invited and will be represented by Defense Minister Valeriu Troenco.

The UK has three clear priorities for the summit: consider the long term implications of the Russia-Ukraine crisis and the changing geostrategic security situation on NATO’s borders; agree the next chapter in our relationship with Afghanistan and how we underline our commitment to our Armed Forces; and ensure that NATO is addressing the new risks from an unstable world of failed states, regional conflicts, terrorism and cyber-attacks.
