Proposal to rename Our Language national holiday doesn't pass Commission vote
The Liberals' proposal to rename the national holiday “Our Language” to “Our Romanian Language” didn't get the endorsement of the Parliament's Legal Commission after only 6 out of 12 members voted for it, one abstained and the rest boycotted it, with the Communist members in particular labeling the proposal “unconstitutional”.
Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu stated at the Commission's meeting that the proposal was not contravening the Constitution, as the fundamental law didn't have any express provision on the holiday “Our Language”.
Communist MP Sergiu Sirbu told reporters the Liberal proposal conflicted with Article 13 of the Constitution which states that the official language of Moldova is Moldovan. “This proposal will create further controversy among society. It's a very sensible issue, because most people in Moldova say they speak Moldovan”.
Parliament will have the final say on the proposal.
