Promulgation of antidemocratic laws would mean violation of Constitution, Dirk Schuebel

Ambassador Dirk Schuebel, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, considers that on May 3 the legislative body adopted a set of antidemocratic laws and their promulgation would mean the violation of the Constitution. The statement was made in a meeting with the Liberal Party head Mihai Ghimpu, which was held before President Nicolae Timofti promulgated four of the adopted laws, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from the Liberal Party, the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova said the European officials are aware of the situation in Moldova and hope that the crisis will be overcome. Dirk Schuebel stressed that political stability and efficient and democratic governance are needed for Moldova to be able to accelerate the European integration process.

Now that the four laws were promulgated, the National Anticorruption Center will be managed by the Government, not Parliament as earlier, while the election threshold for entering Parliament is higher. The powers of the outgoing Cabinet and the interim Prime Minister were extended. The head of state sent only the bill that enables lawmakers to dismiss the Constitutional Court judges to Parliament back for reexamination.
