Promoters of Nisporeni Cross ask that monument be managed by Church of Bessarabia

The monument “Cross of the Savior of the Romanian Nation” that is located in Nisporeni is a connection bridge between the Christians from the two banks of the Prut River and should be managed by the Church of Bessarabia, consider one of the initiators of the project. The promoters expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that the monument was transferred to the Russian Church and the name was shortened to “Cross of the Savior of the Nation”.

In a news conference at IPN, director of the radio station “Vocea Basarabiei” Veaceslav Tibuleac was accused of pursuing commercial goals. Constantin Rusanovschi, the chairman of the Association “Pro-Basarabia”, who is one of the initiators of the project, said that the monument was initially to be erected under this radio station’s aegis. “But, before the monument was brought to the country, Mister Tibuleac asked the donor to issue another donation document, for the public association that he heads,” stated Constantin Rusanovschi, adding that he sought help from the local authorities of Nisporeni, but couldn’t obtain support.

MP Valeriu Saharneanu, one of the initiators of the project, said the local authorities and the residents of Nisporeni district should take care of the monument because the Church of Bessarabia will not be able to do it without their support.

Petru Buburuz, archpriest of the Chisinau Church “Apostles Petru and Pavel”, said that many Christians contributed money and made donations for helping to build the Cross and now feel offended. “The situation should be remedied. The main right to manage this monument belongs to the radio station “Vocea Basarabiei”. Veaceslav Tibuleac only fulfilled orders. It’s a pity that he had unkind thoughts,” said the priest.

The Cross of the Savior of the Romanian Nation was unveiled in August 2011 and is devoted to the union of all the Romanians. Put up on a hill on the left side of the Prut, the Cross that is 35 meters high was made according to the model of the Putna Cross and is situated not far from the Cemetery of Romanian Heroes and the Varzaresti Monastery. Initially, it was managed by the public association headed by Veaceslav Tibuleac, but was later transferred to the Moldovan Metropolitan Church.
