Promo-LEX suggests instituting emergency restraining order

Promo-LEX Association considers that the Government should institute the emergency restraining order as national studies show that every sixth woman in towns and every seventh woman in villages was at least once subject to domestic violence, IPN reports.

In the public forum “Partnership for an Inclusive and Prosperous Moldova: Women Count!”, Promo-LEX’s jurist Lilia Potang said there is a law that protects the victims of domestic violence, but the protection measures are insufficient. The current legislation does not enable the police to issue an emergency order of protection. Such orders are issued only by courts and the procedure is rather long. Promo-LEX requested considering creating rehabilitation centers for victims of domestic violence.

Lilia Potang also said that there is a stereotype in Moldova that domestic violence is a problem concerning the couple. The Government should become involved in informing the people about the dangers and consequents of this phenomenon.
