The producers of flawed goods and the providers of services of a low quality will bear responsibility for the damage caused to the consumers. Related amendments were put forward by the Ministry of Economy. The employers consider that these proposals are justified, but underlined the necessity of fairly implementing the regulated standards, Info-Prim Neo. Anatolie Silistrari, head of the Ministry’s Consumer Protection and Market Surveillance Division, said the bill extends the list of projects for which the producers will pay compensations when damage is caused to the consumers. The list will be supplemented with non-food industrial and agricultural products, electric power, natural gas and water for private consumption. The producers will be obliged to pay not only the cost of the defective product, but also compensations for the damage caused by this product. For example, if the explosion of a TV set affected other objects around, the producer will have to pay the price of the TV set and of the other objects destroyed. According to Anatolie Silistrari, the legislation currently does not clearly say that the producer is responsible for the damage caused by the faulty product or the service of a poor quality. The bill says the producer will bear responsibility for the defective product within 10 years of the purchase of the product. The bill was proposed for public debates. Most of the participants in the discussions said the bill will make the producers more responsible so that they will make sure that their products are of a high quality. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the head of the National Employers Confederation Leonid Cerescu said that the Ministry of Economy’s initiative is justified. “Any service provider and producer of goods must respect the current standards and be held accountable if their services or goods cause damage to the consumers,” he stated, adding that attention should be paid to the way these provisions will be implemented. The given amendments were formulated as part of the action plan on the implementation of the European Commission’s recommendations on the creation of a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area between Moldova and the EU.
