Problems related to conflict settlement cannot be ignored, Jose Manuel Barroso

“The progress made in the Transnistrian conflict settlement process represents one of the priorities of the EU’s foreign policy for our neighborhood. We cannot ignore the problems related to the regional stability and conflict settlement,” the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. “The divisions of the 20th century do not serve the challenges of the 21st century. We want to create a new reality where all the Moldovan people, without exception, would enjoy all the benefits of a modern and efficient political and economic system that would respect their fundamental rights,” Jose Manuel Barroso said Friday during a speech given at the National Palace in Chisinau. The European official stated that the interaction with the public, the young people and civil society is very important in a period of profound reform and change and the significance of all these steps should be explained. “A policy that is not well explained has no chance of being accepted by those to whom it applies - the people. That’s why I chose to speak to you so as to tell you the reason for which I consider that your country made a right choice and why it is a path that is worth being followed,” stated the European Commission President. Jose Manuel Barroso’s speech at the National Palace was listened to by about 2,000 people, among whom senior government officials, ambassadors, institution heads, academicians, political analysts and dozens of students from colleges and universities of Chisinau.
