Problems about which Moldovans are most concerned, poll

Poverty, the shortage of financial resources and high prices are the problems that bother Moldova’s population the most. The COVID-19 pandemic, own poverty and the situation in the sanitary system are ranked second, being followed by the demographic situation and excessive migration of the population, shows a sociological survey initiated and conducted by the Association of Sociologists and Demographers of Moldova, IPN reports.

According to the poll, 54% of those surveyed said they are fully informed about COVID-19. As regards the sources of information, among the most important ones are the television and social networking sites. The respondents were also asked if COVID-19 is the first pandemic that threatens mankind and 70% answered negatively.

As to the elections, if parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, 21% would not know who to vote for, while 9% would not vote. Consequently, each third citizen of the country would be unable to make a well-founded choice. Among the respondents who share particular political beliefs, 48.6% would vote for the Party of Socialists, while 21.9% for the Action and Solidarity Party.

The answers given to the open question: “What should happen for society in the Republic of Moldova to be more united?” suggest the factors that the respondents consider important for strengthening the feeling of unity. Most of those surveyed, over 1/3, mentioned the improvement of the living conditions as a factor that can help unite Moldovan society.

The respondents specified the need to create more jobs, to raise pensions and salaries, devoting of more attention to those in need, bringing of things related to the payment of taxes in order, reduction of migration. Nearly each fifth person mentioned the change of mentality among the solutions. The answers in this category refer to views, norms and common values. Each fifth respondent sees no viable solution for society in Moldova to be more united.

The survey entitled “Social solidarity in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic” was carried out by phone during May 1-7 and covered a sample of 1,141 respondents from 418 localities. The margin of sampling error is + 3.0%.
