Acting mayor of Chisinau Nistor Grozavu asked to conduct an analysis of the events that were held in the Great National Assembly Square so far this year and necessitated the closing of the area to traffic. If need be, the City Hall will submit a draft decision to limit the types of events held in the central square to the Chisinau Municipal Council. The issue was discussed in the September 11 meeting of officials of Chisinau services and divisions, IPN reports.
“I could have got a false impression, but we have recently closed the Great National Assembly Square if not every Saturday and Sunday, then once in two weeks so that all kinds of important or unimportant events could be held. I discussed the subject with colleagues from the National Patrolling Inspectorate and they are also dissatisfied,” stated the mayor, noting that the Chisinau Electric Transport Company also sustains losses. “Maybe the Chisinau Municipal Council should take a decision to specify for what kinds of events the square can be closed.”
Acting head of the Social-Humanitarian and Interethnic Relations Division Cristina Aparatu said a new large-scale event will be held in the central square of Chisinau this weekend. On September 17, the State Guard and Protection Service will stage the world championship “Bodyguard – 2017”. The square will be closed to traffic from 9pm on September 16. Also on Sunday, the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” intends to mount a large protest in front of the Parliament Building.
At the start of June, IPN surveyed Chisinau councilors to find out their opinions about the excess of events held in the Great National Assembly Square. The article shows some of the councilors said public events in the central square should take place only when events of national importance are celebrated. Other interviewed councilors said the provisions of the law on assembly are correct and no one’s right to hold events in the main square of the country should be limited.
