Aft the president of the Democratic Party Vlad Plahotniuc in the party’s National Assembly of October 21 announced the fourth country development path, the pro-Moldova one, which is to become a national doctrine and will form the basis of the PDM’s political program for the next few years, Democratic MP Eugen Nikiforchuk in the talk show “Reply” on Prime TV channel explained that the pro-Moldova orientation of the Democratic Party means first of all the keeping of traditions, values and history of the people.

Receptive to the essence of things, the IPN Experts noted that the National Assembly of the PDM was thoroughly planned, with no financial, media or administrative limitations. The event organized by the PDM was actually a triumph of the implemented modern communication technologies. In this regard, the event was first of all an occasion for launching a propagandistic, pre-electoral campaign. (By the way, a series of media NGOs issued a statement by which they condemn the prevention of journalists representing a number of media outlets from covering the assembly that centered on our country’s future.)

But the unique element of the PDM’s effort resides in the fact that never in the short history of the Republic of Moldova’s independence was such an important event adorned with somehow veiled loans from the political messages and programs of parties from Moldova’s political arena.

Nevertheless, no one can accuse the PDM of plagiarism. First of all, the PDM is a graft deriving from the PDAM and one of the founders of the PDM, Dumitru Diacov, reminded of this in the assembly. Secondly, the formulations of the PSRM were borrowed from the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM), while the PDM’s event involved 2/3 of the former Communist MPs who defected to the PDM and these were present on the stage. Also, the PDM’s event was attended by ½ of the former Liberal-Democratic MPs who also joined the PDM. So, this is not plagiarism, but transfer of expertise from the PCRM and PLDM to the PDM.

Being unable to import a positive image from its direct relations with the EU after the recent worsening of the dialogue, the Democratic Party uses the introduction of the European course in the Constitution as a generator of association with the EU, considers political pundit Dionis Cenușa. In such circumstances, the parties that oppose the government have to distance themselves from the pro-European rhetoric that was undertaken by force by the DPM and its partners. Regrettably, the pro-EU political forces weren’t able to absorb the whole pro-European potential of the voters earlier as well, stated the politologist.

In the same connection, he noted that imposed by the circumstances to reject to revision of the Constitution, the parliamentary opposition does not have real chances to remain in big politics after the elections of February 2019. Unlike this, the extraparliamentary opposition can use the government’s despair and the weakness of the LDPM and LP to strengthen itself. How to treat the idea of reviewing the Constitution – positively, negatively or neutrality – will be the main dilemma for the PAS and PPPDA during the next few months, noted the  expert.

But how do things stand in other countries? The history of the Polish people can serve as an example for the Republic of Moldova. It is an example of how one that is dismembered and persecuted should act so as not to lose the national and linguistic identity, Doctor of History Lilia Zabolotnaya stated in the opening of a scientific conference hosted by the National Museum of History of Moldova. This centered on the Moldovan-Polish relations on the 100th anniversary of the regaining of independence by Poland.

The Independence Day is celebrated in Poland on November 11. The country regained its independence in 1918, after 123 years during which its territory had been controlled by Austria-Hungary, Prussia and Russia.

Our predecessors also gained their independence in 1918 and knew what to do with it. Regaining it in 1991, the Republic of Moldova oscillates on the geopolitical rocking chair and discusses the “European integration in Constitution and in life”. This was the theme of a new debate held by IPN where representatives of parliamentary parties examined the failed attempt to insert the European course in the Constitution. This that was the 95th installment of the series “Developing political culture by public debates”.
