Priests demand not adopting antidiscrimination bill

An initiative group of Orthodox priests from six districts of Moldova Friday made a new appeal to the lawmakers, especially the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu and Speaker Marian Lupu, who heads the Democratic Party, to reject the antidiscrimination bill that is to be put up for adoption, Info-Prim Neo reports. Later today, the group will submit am official statement to the MPs and will have a meeting with a representative of the legislative body, who has not been yet designated. The priests also call on all the faithful people on May 20 to pray to God for Marian Lupu and Mihai Ghimpu so that they are able to resist the internal and external pressure and do not vote the antidiscrimination bill. “We ask Mister Ghimpu and Mister Lupu to be wise and to prevent the adoption of this law. The God’s law says that an order was made for the God’s sons not to couple with the man’s daughters. They broke this law and were punished with death. We will be yet punished with drought and serious diseases if we allow passing this law,” said priest Ioan Grigoras from Drochia. A refined, compromise form of the antidiscrimination bill was approved by the Government on May 10 under a new name – Law on Equal Opportunities. The final version contains the phrase ‘sexual minorities’ only in the article about employment nondiscrimination.
