Leova district has 37 mayor’s offices for 40 settlements and a total population of over 50,000.

Head of the Leova-based public association “Social Partner” Raisa Balan said the local authorities over the last four years have coped well and implemented projects both in the district center and in the villages forming part of the district. There were built water supply and sewerage systems, repaired the Leova stadium and reconstructed a number of monuments. Street lighting was restored and a project to produce light based on solar batteries is to be put into practice. Most of the villages were connected to the supply of gas. An important project to supply water from the Prut River is being implemented in a number of settlements, with connection to Basarabeasca.

However, Leova district needs more social projects designed for socially deprived groups. There are now no public baths in the town or a social home providing different services, as earlier. There are services for those who have money, but the persons in need have reduced access to them.

The projects promised in the previous election campaign were fully implemented. Moreover, new ones were started owing to the authorities that knew how to attract investments given that the local budgets are tight.

Raisa Balan said she expects that the same administration will be elected in the coming local elections so that it completes the initiated projects.

According to her, the local authorities could be more efficient if nongovernmental organizations were engaged in the decision-making process at local and district levels so as to ensure greater transparency in the process of managing public funds.
