Prevention and control are most efficient methods of dealing with cancer, doctors
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Moldova. A number of 7,852 persons suffering from cancer were recorded in 2010, as against 8,043 persons in 2009.The data were presented by the Ministry of Health in the context of the “Anticancer” awareness raising campaign carried out between May 30 and June 12, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Employees of the Oncology Institute will travel to Chsinau, Hancesti, Cantemir, Orhei, and Unghen to provide free consultancy. There will be also held lecturers and public and private discussions and distributed leaflets.
Though constant progress in studying and treating cancer is made, the disease remains a major concern in healthcare. Specialists say a number of risk factors risk lead to the appearance of cancer. One of them is the age. About 77% of the persons suffering from cancer are over 55. Other factors are related to the lifestyle, including drug taking, alcohol abuse, incorrect alimentation, sedentarism. There are also environment-related factors such as polluted air, the effect of chemical substances, infections.
Doctors say the prevention and control are most efficient methods of dealing with cancer. The early detection of the diseases favors the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of persons suffering from cancer.
According to the World Health Organization, at least one third of all the cancer cases could have been prevented. The disease can be prevented by modifying or avoiding the main risks factors.
The medical statistics show that the colorectal cancer cases in 2010 represented 12.8% of all the cases of cancer, lung cancer cases – 10.6%, breast cancer cases – 10.4%, skin cancer cases – 8.8%, while stock cancer cases – 6.1%.
