Press Council of Moldova files complaint against Russian TV program

The Press Council of Moldova asked the Press Council of Russia to examine if the norms of professional journalistic ethics were observed in the program “Pusti govoreat” (“Let them talk”) of September 24, which was broadcast on the Russian TV channel “Pervyi Canal” (“First Channel”), Info-Prim Neo reports. In the December 19 meeting of the Press Council, the Council’s secretary Petru Macovei said the complaint was already accepted by the Russian colleagues for examination. They are to receive an answer from “Pervyi Canal” in a month. According to the Press Council, the program centered on a case that happened in a village in Floresti district, where a teenage boy was beaten and humiliated by a teenage girl and her friends, with the filmed scene being posted on the Internet. The underage persons involved in this case were invited to take part in the program and asked to tell in detail what happened, to answer the moderator’s and other invitees’ questions. The children were exposed to public contempt. They exteriorized their emotions and went again through that unpleasant situation that affected them psychologically. The minor’s face wasn’t blurred in the images showing the humiliating and degrading treatment against him, which were repeatedly presented in the program. The Press Council of Moldova considers that the international ethical standards for journalists, which are recognized worldwide, were seriously violated. Those standards demand that the mass media protect the rights of minors, including of those who are involved in negative events, renounce treating these situations as sensations, and take into account the possible consequences for the children.
