President's term validated by Constitutional Court

The Constitutional Court confirmed the results of the presidential election and validated the term in office obtained by Maia Sandu in the runoff vote on November 3, IPN reports.

Central Election Commission head Angelica Caraman said that in the second round of the presidential election, 1,701,333 voters received ballots and 1,701,284 electors participated in voting. Out of the total number of 1,680,569 valid votes cast, 930,139 people voted for Maia Sandu, nominated by the Party of Action and Solidarity (55.41%), and 750,430 people (44.59%) voted for Alexandr Stoianoglo, nominated by the Party of Socialists.

"Respectively, the CEC declared elected the contestant nominated by the Party of Action and Solidarity Maia Sandu, who obtained the highest number of votes in the second round of the election," said Angelica Caraman.

After the presentation of the report by the CEC head and the round of questions and answers, the Court's judges held deliberations. Afterward, the president of the Constitutional Court Domnica Manole announced the decision to confirm the election outcome and validate the term of the President of the Republic of Moldova. The decision issued is final, cannot be subject to any appeal, enters into force on the date of adoption and is published in the Official Gazette.

At the beginning of the Constitutional Court’s meeting, the Party of Socialists mounted a protest at which it demanded that the election results should not be confirmed. The Socialist MPs were not accepted as a party in the process of examining the request of the Central Election Commission.

In accordance with the legal provisions, the candidate whose election is validated is to take the oath of office before Parliament and the Constitutional Court no later than 45 days after the election.
