President's election will 'cause exodus' from Communist Party
Should the president be elected on March 16, the Communist Party will lose many of its members, thinks Ion Terguta, the director of interstate television company MIR, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“If the president is elected and the Communists carry on with their protests, PCRM could become an extremist party. When things get back to normal and they continue to protest, it’s a big risk they are taking. If the President is elected, people will depart from PCRM, and if not, then nobody will leave”, Terguta told the Special Edition talk-show on Publika TV.
Former Prime Minister Dumitru Braghis thinks that if the President elected on March 16 is accepted by both Europe and the CIS countries, it will be hard for the Communists to claim that power has been usurped. “They should change their approach. But if the President isn’t elected, they are in a good position”, Dumitru Braghis told the same talk-show.
Political analyst Vasile Croitoru is of the opinion that PCRM parliamentarians won’t attend the meeting on March 16 and if the head of the state is eventually elected, the faction will find itself in a highly unpleasant situation after isolating itself from the Legislative.
At a news conference on March 9, PCRM leader Vladimir Voronin announced that his faction wouldn’t participate in the President’s election and wouldn’t recognize the head of the state if the election succeeded. According to him, the election and the Parliament are illegitimate. The PCRM leader stated once again that the Parliament should dissolve and early elections should be called subsequently.
