Presidential election in Transnistrian region is illegal, opinions

It is a simulacrum that will be not recognized by anyone, not even by the Russian Federation, even if this state supports the separatist regime in Tiraspol. This is how the executive director of Promo-Lex Association Ion Manole and political commentator Anatol Țăranu describe the so-called presidential election that will take place in the Transnistrian region on December 12. According to them, the so-called election is an illegal exercise with a predictable result given that the incumbent separatist leader Vadim Krasnoselsky removed all his political opponents, IPN reports.

Promo-Lex executive director Ion Manole noted the so-called presidential election on the left side of the Nistru does not have any credibility before the Moldovan constitutional authorities and aboard. The experts of Promo-Lex cannot monitor the situation in the Transnistrian region in connection with this electoral exercise as the Association’s representatives have been banned from entering the region as from 2015.

“It is an illegal election that will not be recognized even by the Russian Federation, which supports this regime on the left side of the Nistru. There are no observers there and there is no credibility there. It is a local exercise whose outcome is known. We all saw that all the serious opponents were removed, were prevented from running in a more or less authentic election. It is a closed territory controlled by a group of persons who behave as if this territory was acquired by them. Our position, as human rights defenders, is that a territory cannot be closed to journalists and electoral observers,” Ion Manole stared in the talk show “Moldova Live” on the public TV channel M1.

Political commentator Anatol Țăranu said the Transnistrian region during 30 years has simulated the existence of an artificial state, being supported by the Russian Federation. Many citizens from the left side of the Nistru fell into the trap of separatist propaganda that is strengthened by the Russian media.

“This election is a simulacrum. On the left side of the Nistru, there are not only internal interests, but also interests of international players and, owing to these interests, the Transnistrian region survives as an enclave as part of the Republic of Moldova. The constitutionality of the state Republic of Moldova does not embrace this territory. The people from this zone live in an information ghetto even if there are Internet and TV channels there. That regime is harsh. It established censorship and control over all the activities of the people. That’s why the inhabitants of the Transnistrian region live under the pressure of separatist propaganda that for 30 years has shaped the enemy from the right side and many of them believe what the TV channel and the propagandists tell them,” stated Anatol Țăranu.

The Reintegration Policies Bureau said the electoral exercise set for December 12 in the Transnistrian region is held outside the constitutional framework and in breach of the legislation of the Republic of Moldova. The Bureau reiterated the position of the Government of the Republic of Moldova that such “elections” cannot be recognized and are considered null and void. It called on the international partners to refrain from statements, covering, assigning of “electoral observers” or other actions and contacts with representatives of Tiraspol on the issue so as to exclude any legalization of the so-called “election”.
