Presidential election date will be fixed by Parliament at least 60 days before election day

The date of the presidential election will be set by Parliament decision at least 60 days before election day. In case of vacancy of the office of President of the Republic of Moldova, the election will be held within two months of the date the post falls vacant. This is provided in a bill to amend the Election Code, which was reexamined by Parliament following objections from the head of state, IPN reports.

Olesea Stamate, the head of the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities, said that Parliament gave a final reading to the bill to amend the Electoral Code – a legislative initiative of a group of MPs - on December 28. The head of state noted the incongruity of the time limit for organizing elections if the office of President of Moldova falls vacant.

The election period will be the period between the day of entry into force of the act by which the election date is set and the day on which the election results are confirmed by the responsible bodies, but will not be longer than 120 days. The date of the start of the election period will be set by the Central Electoral Commission. Currently, this period starts when the act by which the election date is set is adopted.
