President Voronin has arguments to convince EU to solve the problem of Romanian passports holders

Moldova and its citizens have the duty to undertake all the necessary actions in order to benefit, in the shortest time, from those four liberties which make the EU so attractive. We do not wish to agree and will not agree with those incommodities of the European neighbourhood, met by Moldovan citizens and business today, after Romania’s and Bulgaria’s accession to the European Union. We would be even more sincerely happy for the successes of our neighbours from west, when Moldovan citizens would benefit from all the rights to circulation provided to the citizens of the neighbouring Romania, the president Vladimir Voronin stated in his speech delivered to the representatives of the diplomatic bodies accredited in Chisinau, on Friday, January 26. “If the European Union doesn’t see a problem in the fact that 4 million Moldovan citizens will be able to benefit from European liberties in case they hold Romanian passports, than, I believe that we will be able to find arguments to persuade the EU to solve the problem of these 4 millions of persons on the basis of the Moldovan citizenship. Of course, for this to happen, we will have to modernise our policy in the domain of migration and border control. However all these are goals we can attain. Also we can hasten the solution of problems of the asymmetric trade between Moldova and the EU”, the head of state affirmed. Voronin thanked the World Bank, the EU and the US Government for the substantial support offered for Moldova’s development. “The inclusion of Moldova in the list of states which are able to efficiently use the assistance of the Millennium Challenge Corporation represents a new stage in the history of Moldova’s relations with international financial organisations and bodies, a stage which is not joined neither by enslaving clauses, as it happened in the case of earlier credits, nor by the official’s corruption”, the president said. “The entire totality of complex and difficult problems is related, in the most direct way to the problem of the state’s unification. In this respect, I welcome the joint efforts made by Moldova, Ukraine and the EU at the Moldovan-Ukrainian border. The extension of the negotiations’ format, effective participation of EU and USA in the regulation process, makes the settlement of the Transnistrian dispute into a serious ambition of the entire international community. I’m very glad about the fact that after the meeting with the Russian president on August 8, a new level of the dialogue with Russia appeared in this problem - more responsible and professional. To our great satisfaction, in spite of all the fears and phobias, Russia states its firm support for Moldova’s territorial integrity. My impression is that by the efforts of all the mediators and observers, the Transnistrian problem reached a more bright zone, this is why we should not miss the chance to use all our efforts in order to take advantage of this situation, so that this conflict ends, and Transnistria receives a just status, supported by the international society, and Moldova obtains, at last, the condition of a free, whole, democratic state”, Vladimir Voronin added to his speech presented to the diplomatic bodies accredited in Chisinau.
