President signs decree to initiate referendum

President Igor Dodon, in an extended-format meeting with journalists in the evening of March 28, signed a decree to initiate a national consultative referendum, IPN reports.

The Head of State said the first question that is to be put in the referendum is whether the people support the abrogation of the law that makes the repayment of the US$1 billion stolen from the banking system their burden or not. The people will also vote for or against giving more powers to the President for dissolving Parliament so that this could ultimately announce early parliamentary elections.

In the referendum, the people will also be asked if they agree to reduce the number of MPs from 101 to 71. According to President Dodon, the number of MPs is now too high at a time when Moldova has a population of about 3 million.

The people will also vote for or against studying the History of Moldova in schools.

Igor Dodon proposes that the referendum should be held on September 24 this year. He expressed his confidence that he will be supported by the population and the decree to dissolve Parliament will be signed in October already.
