President says authorities must react promptly to HRC notifications

President Vladimir Voronin claims that the national legislation should stipulate the obligation of public authorities to react promptly and adequately to the notifications of the Human Rights Center (HRC), to ensure the operative examination and solution of the cases linked to the infringement of the rights of citizens and to actively contribute to the respect of fundamental human rights and freedoms. This statement was made by the head of state during a meeting on the issue of making the activity of the HRC more efficient and increasing the role of the ombudsman institute. Vladimir Voronin pleaded for the elaboration of the legal and institutional measures draft, meant to increase the productivity of the Human Rights Center activity. The President referred himself to the necessity of actualizing the Ombudsman Law and its harmonization with EU standards. The head of state also referred to the importance of improving the activity conditions of the Human Rights Center and its branches, as well as the need to improve the legal knowledge of the population. The president said that the state authorities provide the Center and the ombudsmen with activity conditions which would allow them to promptly respond to claims of assistance from citizens in ensuring the respect of their fundamental rights and freedoms. The Ombudsman Law was adopted on October 17, 1997. In 2005, the HRC and its branches registered 1422 petitions addressed by individuals from Moldova and abroad.
