President Maia Sandu is convening a “national assembly” rally themed “European Moldova”, to take place on May 21.
According to the president, the “European Moldova” National Assembly will be an event similar to the 1991 Great National Assembly, when Moldova’s Independence was proclaimed, and will represent a message to the international community about the Moldovan people’s wish to be part of the European family.
“Europe is watching us. The whole world is watching us. Many have the wrong impression that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova are indifferent to what is happening. Some ask the question whether our people want to join the European Union. I suggest that we answer them. I urge you to manifest as a people the clear decision to be part of the European Union. The time has come for those who are watching us, both in the East and in the West, to see that in the decisive moments for our destiny we are united and brave. We launched the initiative to call a Citizens’ Assembly in Chisinau to tell the world that we are Europeans and that this is the path we have chosen”, said Maia Sandu in an address to the nation on Monday.
She added that she will consult all pro-European parties to ask them to support the country’s European path. Maia Sandu called on all the citizens of Moldova “to avoid being divided and show up on May 21 in order to convey to the world the firm desire of the people to be part of the European family”.
“Everyone's voice will cement our European path. Together we support our common dream. Let’s prove that we want peace. We want the European Union to be at home. Just as we came together when we demanded Independence and we got it. Even if we have some grudges, even if sometimes we have different opinions, now is not the time for quarrels and divisions. Now is the time to unite and become part of the European family together”, said President Sandu.
She added that there are political actors in Moldova “who want to divert the European course and who support the military aggression in Ukraine”, referring in particular to controversial remarks by her predecessor, Igor Dodon.
