President refuses to promulgate law on chemical castration of pedophiles

President Nicolae Timofti did not promulgate the law on chemical castration of pedophiles that was passed by Parliament early in March. The President’s spokesman Vlad Turcanu has told Info-Prim Neo that the head of state considers that this law goes against the constitutional provisions that ban the use of degrading treatment towards people, regardless of their deeds. The legislative initiative on the chemical castration of pedophiles was put down by the Liberal Party. It was adopted in two readings and was to come into force on July 1. The chemical castration consists in the administration of a special drug that inhibits sexual desire.
