President of Writers Union: Romanian language is like ‘Cinderella’ in its country

After 25 years of the restoration of the Latin script, things in Moldova haven’t changed as regards the status of the Romanian language. De jure, it is the official language, while de facto it is in the same disagreeable situation as 25 years ago, the president of the Writers Union of Moldova Arcadie Suceveanu has told IPN.

“Our approaches are the same and the same speeches are repeated yearly,” said the writer, suggesting that August 31 must be named the Romanian Language Day and it must be decreed that Romanian is spoken in Moldova. “On August 31 there is a holiday. We come together under the sign of this holiday, which signifies our liberation and national and social emancipation,” said Arcadie Suceveanu.

According to him, it is regrettable that the Romanian language didn’t yet penetrate all the social spheres. “The fact that the language is not used in all the social spheres is a vulnerable point. Romanian continues to be a ‘Cinderella’ in its country,” said the writer. He considers that the Department for Language Functioning on Moldova’s Territory, which existed until 1994, should be re-established so that the language conquers other spheres and contributes to extending the sphere of communication.

“25 years passed and we do not yet know how our language is called. In fact, we know but are cowards and cannot overcome that humiliating fear of saying things as they are - that our language is called Romanian. This shows our level of culture and dignity,” stated Arcadie Suceveanu.

The Our Language Day is marked in Moldova on August 31.
