President of Moldova is elected today

The MPs are electing the head of state today. The only candidate running in the elections is the chairman of the Supreme Council of Magistrates Nicolae Timofti. The special sitting of Parliament starts at 08.00, Info-Prim Neo reports. The President is elected by the votes of 61 of the 101 MPs. The 58 lawmakers of the Alliance for European Integration and unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea expressed their intention to vote in favor of Nicolae Timofti. The decisive votes are to be given by the Socialist MPs. Their leader Igor Dodon said that they took a decision, but will announce it in the special sitting of Parliament, before the voting process. The Communist MPs said they will boycott the elections because they consider they are illegal. The special commission for the organization of the presidential elections will convene before the special sitting to decide if the MPs will vote with the special stamp “Voted 2012 President of Moldova” or with the pen. The members of the commission will return to their previous decision as experts said that voting with the stamp is not in compliance with the law. For the elections to be validated, at least 61 MPs should vote in them. If the President is elected and the Constitutional Court validates the election results, the head of state is sworn in within 45 days of the voting. New elections will be held if the results are invalidated. The President’s term in office is four years.
