President of Moldova and new President of Ukraine are in difficult situation, opinion

The President of Moldova Igor Dodon and the new President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy are in a difficult situation. The two Presidents would like to meet, but Igor Dodon should first explain the statements he made about Crimea. The issue was developed in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Alexandru Solcan, dean of the Faculty of International Relations and Political Sciences of the State University of Moldova, said that if Zelenskiy accepts to restart the relations with Russia, being more indulgent and focusing on the economic or other types of relations and leaving aside Crimea and Donbass, things will develop according to the scenario of Moldova’s “Transnistrization”. This would be a means by which Russia would keep Ukraine in its sphere of influence and would limit its maneuvering space.

Political commentator Anatol Țăranu said everything was clear as to the Transnistrian dispute during the presidency of Petro Poroshenko and Moldova was relatively calm. “We knew what we can expect and could build a policy based on logic and on known data. An element of uncertainty appeared now and we should try to overcome it somehow and to anticipate what Zelenskiy will do. Zelenskiy said nothing about the Transnistrian region and the Republic of Moldova,” stated the expert.

Comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy won the presidential runoff held in Ukraine on April 21. According to the Central Election Commission of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskiy polled over 73% of the ballot, which is about 12.5 million votes. His rival, ex-President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko gained over 24% of the vote. More than 2% of the ballots were invalidated.

President Igor Dodon sent a congratulatory message to Volodymyr Zelenskiy on the occasion of the overwhelming victory he won in the presidential runoff in Ukraine. “I’m convinced that his tenure of the highest state post will contribute to Ukraine’s further prosperity for the benefit of its people. I express my confidence that the century-old relations of good neighborhood between our nations and countries, based on constructive cooperation and mutual understanding, will continue to develop and to strengthen successfully,” President Dodon said in a message that was published by the presidential press service. Igor Dodon voiced hope that a meeting to discuss the agenda of the bilateral relations will be possible in the nearest future.
