President of Latvia will return from Chisinau to Riga accompanied by Ukrainian refugees

As many as 500 Ukrainian refugees who came to the Republic of Moldova will continue their way to Latvia. The first 30 refugees will leave to Riga from Chisinau on April 7 by the same plane as the President of Latvia Egils Levits, President of Moldova Maia Sandu announced in a news conference, being quoted by IPN.

Maia Sandu said that 95,000 Ukrainian refugees are now in Moldova and half of them are children. Most of them are housed by people in their homes. The number of Ukrainian refugees who come to Moldova can yet rise and they therefore asked for the support of international institutions.

The President of Latvia Egils Levits reiterated the country’s commitment to help Ukraine. “Ukraine fights for our common values. Latvia delivered military and political assistance to Ukraine. I’m convinced that Ukraine will continue to defend the common values, which are Western values,” said the official.

Egils Levits noted that the Latvian authorities are ready to work with the Government and the Presidential Office of Moldova on a number of aspects and support Moldova’s decision to submit an application for EU membership.

In the same news conference, the President of Latvia said that his country will donate about 80,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to the Republic of Moldova. These will be delivered to Chisinau in June.
