The Federal President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is in Moldova on an official visit, was met by President Maia Sandu at the at Presidential Palace, IPN reports.

The German official was welcomed with military honors in a ceremony that involved the Guard of Honor. Inside the Presidential Palace, the two Heads of State took pictures and then left for discussions together with the members of delegations. The press does not have access to the meeting.

The officials will make statements for the press at the Presidential Place starting at 1:35pm. Later, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will lay flowers at the monument to Stephan the Great and Holy.

Starting at 4pm, Maia Sandu and Frank-Walter Steinmeier will take part in the opening of a Moldovan-German Business Forum at the Place of the Republic.

The Federal President’s visit forms part of the series of visits made by other Presidents. In May, a visit to Chisinau was paid by the President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda. The festivities held to celebrate the Independence Day involved the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, the President of Poland Andrzej Duda and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. The President of Slovenia Borut Pahor is expected to visit Chisinau towards the end of this week.
