President Nicolae Timofti put his signature in the condolence book of the Embassy of France in Chisinau in sign of mourning for the victims of the Paris terrorist acts, IPN reports.
According to the presidential press service, on behalf of the Moldovan people the head of state offered his condolences to the people of France who were affected by those tragic events. Nicolae Timofti condemned the terrorist acts and expressed his solidarity with the international community that united in the fight against terrorism. “The values of democracy cannot be negotiated,” said the head of state. Earlier, Moldova’s President sent a message of condolence to his French counterpart Francois Hollande.
French Ambassador to Moldova Pascal Vagogne thanked Nicolae Timofti for the message of support transmitted to the people of France.
On January 7, two masked radical Islamists forced their way into the offices of the French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris and killed 12 people. The fatalities included mainly journalists. The next day, a policewoman was shot dead by Islamists who tried to assail the head office of a TV channel. Three terrorist, including brothers Kouachi, who staged the attack on Charlie Hebdo, were killed during antiterrorist operations on January 9 after holding people hostage in a printing house and a Jewish supermarket. The hostage held at the printing house escaped, while four of the hostages from the Jewish store could not be saved.
A solidarity march that involved 3.7 million people, including heads of state and members of government from all over the world, was mounted in Paris on January 11.
