President 'inclined' to promulgate Equality Law
Moldova President Nicolae Timofti told reporters he was “fairly inclined” to promulgate the recently adopted Law on Ensuring Equality, provided that it was in full compliance with the Constitution, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I accepted to become President accepting the Eurointegration Alliance's program, and we have declared European integration to be Moldova's national idea. If this law is required for integration, I am fairly inclined to promulgate it”, he stated.
Prime Minister Vlad Filat, for his part, declared that his colleagues and himself would stay firm on the European integration course and would make every effort to achieve this goal. “Regretfully there has been a lot of speculation which omitted the fact that such legislation exists in all the civilized world that we are attempting to approach. This Law has been discussed in very speculative and biased terms, with large doses of falsehood involved. Ultimately, this Law is about defining very clearly the notion of discrimination”.
Concerning the opposition of the clergy, Vlad Filat noted that in Moldova the Church was separated from the state, and that the government should do what was right for the entire country and not for a particular group or institution.
The Law on Ensuring Equality was adopted by Parliament on Friday, being a requirement for Moldova to advance in the visa liberalization dialogue with the European Union.
