President Sandu convokes Supreme Security Council to discuss situation in energy sector

President Maia Sandu has convened a meeting of the Supreme Security Council (SSC) for Tuesday. The SSC members are to discuss the situation in the energy sector and assistance measures for the population, IPN reports.

After the Council’s meeting, the head of state will hold a press conference, starting at 11:30 a.m.

Since December 16, Moldova has been under a state of emergency for 60 days in connection with the situation in the energy sector. In the Transnistrian region, the local administration declared a state of economic emergency on December 9, later extending it until February 8. Since Russian gas has not reached the region after January 1, more than 51,000 households have been left without gas and almost 1,500 apartment buildings have no heat or hot water. Also, the inhabitants of the region daily face power cuts.

The Moldovan Thermoelectric Power Plant (MGRES) no longer supplies electricity to the right bank of the Nistru, the needs being met from other sources. On Tuesday, for the first time, Moldova will resort to emergency power purchase agreements. "To avoid power cuts, the transmission operator Moldelectrica will request electricity from Romania’s transmission operator Transelectrica so that the consumption needs can be satisfied," adviser to the director of Energocom, Victor Bînzari told IPN.
