Preparations for upcoming school year at 75% in Chisinau

Preparations for the upcoming school year in Chisinau are going according to plan, and capital repairs in educational establishments are 75% done. This was announced by the head of the municipal Education Division, Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb, at the City Hall's ordinary meeting on Monday, IPN reports.

She also announced that 80 new groups will be established in Chisinau's kindergartens to take their number to 280. An amount of 4 million lei has been allocated for this purpose.

Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb said that, in the new school year, 34 schools and kindergartens will accommodate resources centers for children with special educational needs.

The municipal education chief added that this year there will be 7200 first-graders, by 200 more than in the previous school year. Last year, a total of 77,000 children studied in Chisinau's schools and 36,000 children went to kindergarten. Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb remarked that the number of students has dropped by roughly 25,000 in the last 10 years.

The municipality considers a temporary merger of some educational establishments, as the per-student financing scheme has proved inefficient in the schools with small numbers of students. For example, by May 31, a number of schools had spent all of their allocations and the municipality had to help them out with some 6 million lei from the city coffers.
