Premier's intervention urged to stop destruction of landmarks
The National Participatory Council and the Landmarks Inspection and Restoration Agency wrote to Prime Minister Vlad Filat requesting the Government's intervention to stop the destruction of national and local landmarks, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to the letter, if landmarks are kept being destroyed at the current pace, we could soon lose the historical nucleus of Chisinau as well as other national architectural monuments across the country.
The National Participatory Council recalled that on 22 June 2011 it requested the Government to take the necessary actions in order to stop the destruction of the architectural heritage; however it hasn't received any answer since then and the relevant state authorities haven't intervened in any way to resolve the problem.
In another development, the National Participatory Council notes that the Landmarks Inspection and Restoration Agency has since recently been the target of pressure exerted by Culture Minister Boris Focsa, who ordered an “unjustified inspection” at the Agency to allegedly intimidate its staff and bring it to silence.
On January 25, Culture Minister Boris Focsa ordered an inspection at the Landmarks Agency with the stated purpose of checking how efficiently and legally it used public money in the period 2010-2011.
