Doctors at the Timofei Mosneaga Republican Clinical Hospital saved the life of a 62-year-old man diagnosed with a rupture of a thoracoabdominal aneurysm. The specialists performed a surgery using thoracophrenolumbotomy - a procedure never before conducted in Moldova. The operation lasted over seven hours, according to a press release from the institution, IPN reports.
The aneurysm measured 27 cm and was located in a region that supplies blood to the visceral organs and spinal cord, a highly challenging area for surgery. The operation required a mixed team of surgeons and the use of extracorporeal circulation, the source noted.
The patient had been suffering from persistent abdominal pain for two years without knowing the exact cause. About a year ago, he was diagnosed with a thoracoabdominal aneurysm with a high risk of rupture but declined the recommended surgery. In November this year, his condition suddenly deteriorated due to the aneurysm rupture. Initially, the man was hospitalized at the Clinical Hospital in Balti and later urgently transferred to the Timofei Mosneaga Republican Clinical Hospital for specialized treatment.
Currently, the patient is feeling well. He has been discharged and is continuing his treatment at home.
