Premier seeks criminal punishment for those to blame for death of young woman from Drochia

Prime Minister Pavel Filip demands that those to blame for the death of the 20-year-old Niculina Bulat from Drochia should be not only dismissed, but also held criminally accountable. In the opening of the November 3 meeting of the Commission for Emergencies, Pavel Filip said the young woman died because of the negligence of doctors of the Drochia District Hospital and Balti Municipal Hospital, which didn’t provide the necessary assistance, IPN reports.

The young woman, who had been on dialysis for many years, was allegedly the victim of doctors’ neglect. One night, her state worsened. Being an orphan, she asked her cousin to call an ambulance and was then taken to the Drochia Hospital. They put her a bandage there and told her to go to Balti for having the liquid accumulated in the abdomen removed. She travelled to Balti at her own expense as the ambulance in Drochia didn’t have fuel.

In Balti, she had several liters of liquid taken out of her belly and then was told to go home as the doctors could do nothing more even if she felt sick. She couldn’t walk for several days. She waited for the day she was to go to Chisinau for dialysis. Her state of health was so bad that he she could not get onto the bus. A private car was found and this took her to the Mother and Child Institute, where she was told to come next week. In several days she was hospitalized in Chisinau owing to complications, but died there.

The Premier said this case shows lack of common sense in doctors. He instructed that all those involved in this case should be identified during a week. “I expect not only dismissals, but also criminal punishment. The law enforcement bodies should be informed so that they determine everyone’s culpability level,” stated Pavel Filip.

Minister of Health, Social Protection and Family Stela Grigoras said the Ministry launched an internal inquiry. “No matter what the circumstances where – error, imprudence, insufficient medical training or attitude – those to blame will be penalized in accordance with the law, including criminally, civilly or disciplinarily,” it is said in the Ministry’s press release.
