Premier checks effectiveness of fastened seatbelt

Prime Minister Vlad Filat and the head of the Traffic Police Division Gheorghe Botnariuc tested the mechanical equipment that imitates a road accident by creating an impact with an obstacle. The equipment was placed in Chisinau’s central square, Info-Prim Neo reports. The test is done as part of a road safety drive themed “Use the Seatbelt” organized by the Automobile Club of Moldova, which is a member of the International Automobile Federation and the National Road Safety Council. The drive is supported by the Government of Moldova. According to Government specialist Sergiu Diaconu, this mechanism shows what can happen to a person who is in a car that hits an obstacle at a speed of only 30 kilometers per hour. The person suffers serious injuries if the safety belt is not buckled. Gheorghe Botnariuc said the drive is aimed at sensitizing the participants in the traffic to the dangers they are exposed to when traveling with the seatbelt unfastened. The statistics show the risk of receiving traumas when the seatbelt is fastened is by 80% lower. Vlad Filat called on the traffic participants to protect their lives by using the safety belts and to observe the traffic rules. The “Use the Seatbelt” drive forms part of the national campaign “Make Roads in Moldova Safe”, which is supported by the International Automobile Federation and the Eastern Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Transport. Over 8,000 cases of persons traveling unbuckled have been recorded this year. The fine for such an offense is 300 to 400 lei, plus three penalty points.
