Prime Minister Iurie Leanca urged the political players to refrain from making populist statements. Asked to pronounce on Gagauz Governor Mihail Formuzal’s statement that if Transnistria receives the status of republic, Gagauzia will also asks for such a status, the Premier underlined that the Transnistrian settlement is a complex and sensitive process that requires a responsible attitude, IPN reports.
“For the same reason, when statements are made, either populist in character or with the aim of sabotaging this process, the impact and effects hamper the negotiation process, the process of identifying a durable political solution. My request is to refrain from such statements or to think first about the effects of these statements on the negotiation process,” said Iurie Leanca.
Earlier, the Communist leader Vladimir Voronin said the Transnistrian region should be granted the status of republic within the Republic of Moldova. The Gagauz governor supported this idea, saying Gagauzia will ask for a similar status.
