Pregnant women and nursing mothers to get UN food

9,500 Moldovan pregnant women and nursing mothers, living in areas extremely affected by the last summer drought, including Transnistria, will get food parcels from the UN, Info-Prim Neo reports. The coming weeks, every beneficiary will get a parcel containing sugar, cornflour, vegetal oil, rice, wheat flour and powder milk. The parcels will be distributed through Family Doctor Centers in 19 districts, reads a communique issued by the UN. The beneficiaries coming from poor families have been selected by several NGOs, local authorities and the Health Ministry. Back in the fall of 2007, other 9,000 pregnant women and nursing mothers benefited of such food parcels from the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) within its project to urgent assistance because of the drought in Moldova. The project was launched in September last year, the total available budget being about $9 million. The project unfolds with the financial support of the European Commission, SIDA, the Austrian Development Agency, the Governments of the Netherlands, Norway, Italy and Finland and other donors.
