The leader of the European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM) Iurie Leanca signed an agreement on the National Partnership for European Integration with the government coalition. The announcement was made by the Head of Parliament Andrian Candu and unaffiliated MP Iurie Leanca on July 29. It was also announced that Iurie Leanca was named chairman of the Parliamentary Council for European Integration, IPN reports.
Andrian Candu said the decision to name Iurie Leanca as head of the Council was taken in the meeting of the Parliament’s Standing Bureau. According to him, this decision is a very good one given Leanca’s rich experience in the field accumulated while servicing as a minister of foreign affairs and as a Prime Minister. “I’m sure that I hand over the administration of this Council into good hands and that we will have success and very good results,” he stated.
Iurie Leanca spoke about the partnership agreement with the government coalition, saying that this political accord is aimed at modernizing the Republic of Moldova and its European integration. According to him, the European integration is not only a geopolitical option, but also a project that will enable to fight system scourges. After the elections of November 2014, the relationship with the EU deteriorated and this affected Moldova’s image. Now the dialogue with the EU should be restored.
The MP said the key elements of this accord derive from the major problems faced by Moldova, namely the justice sector reform and the fight against corruption. In this regard, the Moldovan authorities will ask the European partners to send a mission for the justice sector reform. As to the banking frauds, Iurie Leanca said he wants light in this case to be cast the most. Thus, in order to accelerate the investigation, as the chairman of the Parliamentary Council for European Integration, he will ask for a European inquiry in this regard.
He noted that his goal is to create all the preconditions needed for submitting an application for joining the EU by the end of the current Parliament’s mandate, which is in 2018. “Today, by this partnership, we aim to take all the existing opportunities,” he stated.
Under the agreement signed between the PPEM and the government coalition, the sides unconditionally pledge to unconditionally take measures at national and foreign levels to ensure the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU.
