The European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM) aims to engage the diaspora in the modernization and Europeanization of the country. On February 5, the party launched the program “Ten for the Diaspora”, which envisions the creation of a ‘Diaspora Ministry’, bringing back of the young people to the country and setting up of centers for the Moldovans who work or live abroad, IPN reports.
The program includes a number of activities such as the opening of a larger number of consulates that will provide cheaper, simpler, swifter and more accessible services for the citizens. There will also be implemented a support program to reintegrate the Moldovans who return home and to encourage others to come back to Moldova. The PPEM also aims to ensure a mechanism for the diaspora to be represented in the country’s Parliament.
The party’s chairman Iurie Leanca said the practices of using the diaspora in elections only or when registering a new political project should be abandoned. “A political party must work with the diaspora on a permanent basis and inspire itself from what the diaspora says and must continuously promote the diaspora’s interests so as to together bring about changes. Our people from abroad are the country’s treasure about which many forgot. They should be appreciated and helped so that they, for their part, help us reform the Republic of Moldova,” he stated.
The initiators of the program aim to create cultural programs for the Moldovan children from the diaspora, to launch a program to decrease the charges for transporting parcels and money and to make these services safer and more accessible and to guarantee by law the social protection of the Moldovans from the diaspora. Another goal is to develop projects that will allow increasing the investments made by citizens from the diaspora in the country and promoting Moldova’s image abroad.
